glassy urchins of Europa by fraterchaos glassy urchins of Europa by fraterchaos
Mandelbulb 3D 1.8.0

Most scientists now agree that there is a huge ocean of water contained under the outer icy crust of Jupiter's moon Europa. It is kept warm and liquid by tidal forces of Jupiter and the other moons pulling upon Europa. This creates friction and therefore heat, which possibly could create a moon-girdling ocean of water at temperatures which might support life. What would ewe find there? None really know, but I would guess there might be at least some kind of primitive life in such an environment, and I am not alone.

From the first time I had heard such a theory, I have been drawn to the idea, and love thinking about what we might find there.

This is my idea of what a spiny sea urchin like creature might look like in such an environment.

I used transparency and reflections on this, but nothing really became transparent, but it did give a nice, glass-like surface texture.

Cool organic stuff! I had not heard that about Europa.

Thing with reflections and transparency - you usually have to adjust the colours and a lot of things to make it appear so - but yes, this does have a great glassy sheen! :D

well, I did try a lot of stuff, trouble is the reflections are so slow even small renders its hard to try as many things as I would like, so usually I end up just giving up because I get tired of waiting a half hour to see enough of the image with reflections to tell that I need to change a color or a light and then another half hour to see if it worked...
and sometimes it will look pretty good at 500 X 500 and then I do full size and it doesn't...

I need a faster computer so badly

I need one too! Drives me crazy having to try out so many different things and still not get the result I want! I have a glassy one I'm working on - may try the newest version on it and see if I get a better look! :D

I still have not installed the newest newest one, installed 1.8 but then I started a dIFS that took over a day to render and will take another day for reflections... so until that's done I can't put in 1.8.1

I just rarely have the patience if a render is going to take much more than 5 hours so that's why I hardly ever use the dIFS! Also if I've got m3d rendering, everything else is so slow. Takes forever to open net pages and SL lags badly!

So yeah, I need an upgrade badly too!

I just hope all of these efforts (prolly not enough!) will get me a job one of these years! ARG! :D

lol, I know the feeling... oddly, I have found that on my machine, doing two renders at a time seems to work best... MB doesn't like to give up any processor power, except to other copies of MB... running one makes my browser freeze all the time, but running two MBs gives that little extra room for the browser to wriggle in between them LOL

Yeah, tell me about dIFS... got ione going now... was saying 20 hours to render, got that done (probably took a bit less but not much) and now its saying 2 days for the reflections! (actually, that was yesterday, its down to ten hours now)

Hm...lately I find that I can render no more than one at a time without screwing up everything else! I have NO idea how I used to render like 4-5 at one time! :D

do you know about the stuff on the Internals tab? you can change the priority of MB there... Normal being uses the usual amount of processor power, idle uses far less... I usually set the one I want to finish first to one of the higher setting (but not normal unless I'm sleeping) and set the one I want to take longer to Idle... that can help

Very nice render Frater! They do however look a tad lethal! You are correct about Europa, and Enceladus may just be #1 according to some scientists for possible primitive life forms in our solar system. These 2 moons beat out Mars. :handshake:

yes I know.. I wasn't really aware of any theories about Enceladus... have to look into that.

I won't give up hope on Mars either though... I have often thought we are going about the search there the wrong way... we should have dropped one of those probes into the Vallis Marinaris... in places that canyon is six miles deep! I can't do the math, but I would have to guess if any part of Mars have an atmosphere that might be thick enough to support any life that may have survived there, it would be in the deepest canyons...

and yeah, they do look kind of deadly... I assume they need them for defense against the Europan sharks...

thanks my friend :)

You are welcome my friend! I have never given up on Mars either and I agree that they should have figured out a way to get a probe into Valles Marineris
also! The atmosphere might be dense enough to support some sort of life as gasses like nitrogen, methane and O2 seem to settle better at lower altitudes. At 31,680 feet deep, who knows what one might find. The Mariana Trench is 36,221 ft below the Ocean and it supports life! Deep below the Martian surface, scientists claim there may be vast quantities of water too. We just have to verify it's existence tho! Just a thought! Here is a link on Enceladus! [link]

I ahve also thought that, once we have verified that there is no life on Mars (if that is truly the case) it would perhaps be extremely easy to terraform it... everyone talks about these huge projects costing trillions and taking decades or centuries... but if the biggest issue is water, why not just hit it with a big ass comet? we have the technology now that we could push a comet so it would hit Mars... the added water would surely thicken the atmosphere and perhaps allow humans to live there, or at least start plants there... and if plants take hold, people won't be far behind.

Not sure what's up, the Enceladus link says 404 -resource not found

I read this in an on-line science journal about a month ago. This states facts about Mars and I have intertwined some ideas for terraforming it!

Even in its deepest valleys, the atmosphere is no denser than the Earth's stratosphere, and 95% of that is carbon dioxide, plus the fact that Mars is cold. Even in midsummer at the equator, surface temperatures rarely exceed 60F and just a few inches above the ground, the temperature falls sharply. At night, it will drop to
-100F. In midwinter at the poles, the temperature plummets below -200F.
Water remains locked in the polar ice caps, that we know for sure. These are a mix of water ice and frozen carbon dioxide. If it's true that no life exists on Mars, we could figure out a way to drive a comet into it or figure out a non-nuclear way (hopefully) to vaporize some of the water ice and the CO2 at the North Pole. With the Martial winds in their mid-summer season gusting from 50 to 125 mph, this may be enough to disperse the O2 and the CO2 globally. Then, in a few years after the CO2 helps warm up the planet, send up some algae, lichen or some other form of Flora that consumes the CO2 and releases O2 and some water, at least enough to condense and use in habitats constructed there! Long way off my friend!
Here is the link to Enceladus....hopefully this one works>>>>[link]
