Don't Call it War

By Charles Kunkle Jr.

The latest wonderful news from our good friends the Republican Party? Let's cut Food Stamps, Medicare, Meals on Wheels, Cancer Research and Screening, so we can put more money into Defense! Its good to know they are so worried about our safety.

My question is, exactly who is we need to be protected from? You say we need a Star Wars type missile defense system on the East Coast to protect us from Iranian Nuclear Bombs? Iran does not HAVE nuclear bombs people, and if a nation like North Korea can't make a missile that can actually get off the ground without exploding, just how dangerous can a place like Iran be?

But whether you believe we are in serious danger from Iran or not, you have to wonder about the idea of cutting off the programs they want to cut to pay for the increased military spending... what's the point really? If you strip the American People of everything they need to live a decent life, what is there to protect?

We can't tax the rich folks who actually HAVE things that they want protected... no, we should cut all programs that assist those who have no other options, so that when the bombs do start falling, the people who end up dead were not worth anything anyway.

But its so much worse.

I was watching one of the news programs on msnbc. They were interviewing one of the Republican Representatives on why he had voted to restore the military cuts at the expense of social programs. They also showed some footage, I believe it was some of this man's actual campaign footage, where he was delivering "Meals on Wheels"... so you KNOW he knows what Meals on Wheels does, who they help.

When asked why he wanted to cut the funding for Meals on Wheels, his response was this: "I want these people to get out of poverty, to get good jobs". Remember that this man has actually gone out, house to house, delivering these "free meals" to the people who qualify for them. So he definitely KNOWS, beyond any doubt, who receives these meals.

And who then, receives "Meals on Wheels"? Who are these people getting a free hand out they do not deserve? Eighty and ninety year olds who cannot go shopping for themselves! These are the horrible, lazy bums that need to get off their asses and go to work! Your arthritic grandmother, your father with Alzheimer's... the old lady in the walker who takes twenty minutes to make it to her mailbox and another twenty to walk back.

But it gets so much worse!

The Republicans KNOW that the Senate is NEVER going to pass this bill. And even if by some unbelievable freak the Senate would pass it, The President will NEVER sign it into law, and they certainly do not have the votes to override his veto. So why even spend time on such a bill?

You know its a big waste of time... and its not even a political move... it does NOT make your party look better, or give them some advantage down the road. It makes you look like greedy, stupid, wasteful, close-minded idiots!

But it gets so much better!

Personally I thank them for this, because each and every time they do some stupid, self-serving, cater-to-the-rich and the TEA party fanatics, they lose more and more of the general population. So I say keep up the great work Republicans, keep on showing us who you really work for...

Oh and yeah, its so wrong for anyone to call their behavior a "War on the Poor"

A brief explanation on the inner workings of "Capital Hill":
You are so right, friend. It is absurd that this man even made such a statement. He should be kicked out for being such an ass. Meals-On-Wheels are not delivering food to people who are able to get about. I have done it, and know that the people I delivered to could not move about, nor had transportation. You have to 'qualify' for special assistance, in order to get on the list, so the man's remarks are inflamatory, as he is wanting to associate himself with others who have espoused support of this idea that too many Americans are suckling off the Social Welfare teat. I would say, from personal experience, that this is true, but this is not the point I wish to make. See, he is espousing support of this idea, to gather others to it, for leverage. We do not live in a DEMOCRACY. They proved this when they brought in the 'Electoral Vote'. Individual voices do not matter, anymore. So, to my point, this bill is being leveraged. Everyone and his 'brother' will add their two cents worth to the whole, so that when it does come time to cut it up and serve it, they can trim away the 'fat'. It is a negotiations tool, by which the Bureaucrat can prove his worth, and ensure his standing in 'their' community'. They use it by way of 'giving in' to one sides point of view, in order to get theirs put forth, in the end. 'I scratched your back, and laid off the cutting of Social Welfare, no you scratch my back, and do something for me,..'
It is a different subject, the use of this money for defense. One which I can not address at this time, for matters of 'Non-disclosure'.. [Just kidding, Just Kidding!,..]

well, I agree. what bothers me about this whole thing is how the right wing keeps arguing that its all some left wing game trying to accuse them of not caring, while everything they do proves they don't care. No democrats forced (or tricked or hypnotized) these guys into cutting social programs, that is their platform. The same comes with this "war on women", no democrats are somehow forcing the right wing to pass laws against women's rights, against contraception. If they really believe these things, they should own them, instead of trying to say its some farce created by their opponents.

On defense... I just have a really hard time believing we face some immanent threat from Iran, or any other mid-east nation that might develop nukes, and even if there were a threat, there's no evidence whatsoever that these star wars things will even work.

Same over here! At least most Canadians are still pacifists so we balk at ANY military spending. However they WILL try to think of all the incredibly stupid things they can spend money on instead of improving the conditions of the other 99%!

One really has to wonder where they think they will get with this kind of tactic. On the other hand, that hasn't stopped them before!

I sure wish there was more we could do!

Excellently written! :D

yeah I don't understand it at all... when people see they want to take even more away from the poor an middle class, how is that going to help them?

the only thing I can think of why they are pulling this is because they are having a hard time arguing that democrats are weak... so they introduce this military spending bill they know the dems will vote down, and then they can start saying dems are weak again... even though Obama did what Bush couldn't (r wouldn't) do and got Bin Laden...

well, down here, the right has always tried to claim the high ground on defense and the military, and claimed the left were pacifistic socialists... everyone tried to say that if Obama got elected we would get attacked again... instead, Obama got Bin Laden which Bush (a righty) could not do... so now the right has to find some way of making the left look weak again

I agree, but the right wingers know that war makes money for their friends in the military industrial complex... and they also love forcing their ideas on others at the point of a gun...
