In J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Silmarillion" the evil dark lord Morgoth built two underground fortresses in the north of Middle Earth, one, his main abode, Utumno, where he himself lived, was surrounded by the Mountains of Thangorodrim made from the slag of his digging. But near the shore of Middle Earth he also delved Angband (translated "the hells of iron") as a defense against any attack by the Valar that might come from the sea. Angband was presided over by Morgoth's chief Lieutenant, Sauron, who escaped the full wrath of the Valar at the end of the 2nd age and later arose as a Dark Lord in his own right, creating the One Ring and trying to conquer all of Middle Earth in his turn.
This image made me think of the gateway that might have lead to the depths of Angband.

Isn't there a big group of monster spiders in that book? That really creeped me out. It wasn't an easy read but it was still fascinating and gives you the background for the Lord of the Rings.
